The first half started slowly, with neither team able to create a rhythm. There were more fouls – and injuries – than there were shots on goal, with the medical staff kept busier than the goalkeepers. The only chance of note came in the 29th minute, when Brayan Garnica nearly finished off a cross by Luis Reyes.
On the other hand, Atlas couldn’t have started the second half any better. In the 46th minute, halftime substitute Matías Alustiza finished off a cross from José Madueña to give the Rojinegros the 1-0 lead.
The goal brought the game to life and soon the action was end to end, with both teams creating all the chances that the first half had been lacking.
In the 62nd minute, Atlas added to their lead. Alustiza backheeled a cross to Martín Barragán, who made no mistake with his finish.
The 2-0 lead put Atlas in firm control of the game, and not even the late ejection of Édgar Zaldivar for a foul on Elías Hernández was enough for León to get a foothold in the game. The loss ensures La Fiera will remain in last place in the table for at least another week.
With the 2-0 win, Atlas reaches 13 points while León still has five.
