Pumas UNAM vs Santos Laguna – Jornada 9 Recap and Highlights

pumas santosPumas UNAM ended Santos Laguna’s unbeaten start to the Clausura 2017 season with this afternoon’s 2-1 victory. The result keeps Pumas unbeaten at home this season, while Santos is now winless in five.

The visitors started the game off better, with Djaniny and Walter Sandoval causing trouble for Pumas’ defense; however, they were unable to turn those opportunities into goals.

Francisco Palencia went to his bench in the 30th minute as he looked to give Pumas more of a foothold in the game, and the introduction of Matías Britos to the field soon paid dividends.

In the 47th minute, combination play between Britos, Nicolás Castillo, and Pablo Barrera ended with Castillo scoring the opening goal to make it 1-0 for the universitarios.

In the 66th minute, Castillo found his second with another assist from Barrera to put Pumas firmly in control of the game.

Santos looked for a response and in stoppage time Djaniny was able to reduce the deficit to 2-1, but it was too little, too late for the visitors, who saw their eight-game unbeaten streak halted.

With the 2-1 win, Pumas reach 14 points while Santos still has 12.
