The hosts took the lead from the penalty spot in the 17th minute, with Enrique Triverio converting the spot kick after Morelia was called for a handball in the box.
Then, in the 30th, the Diablos Rojos made it 2-0 when Carlos Esquivel tapped the ball in following an assist from Sinha.
Morelia was able to reduce the deficit before halftime, though, with a long-distance shot from Mairo Osuna taking a deflection to beat Alfredo Talavera in the 40th minute.
In the second half, the visitors tied it up with a goal from Cristian Penilla in the 65th minute.
After that, the game went completely off the rails for Toluca, who saw Jesús Méndez, Enrique Triverio, Alfredo Talavera, and coach Hernán Cristante all ejected in a three-minute span starting in the 82nd minute.
Carlos Esquivel had to take Talavera’s place in goal and he even managed to make a pair of saves to send the game to a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Mario Osuna, Jorge Zárate, and David Cabrera converted their penalties for Morelia, while César Barrientos, Efraín Velarde, and Rodrigo Gómez all saw theirs saved.
With the 2-2 draw (3-0 shootout win), Morelia advances to the quarterfinals while Toluca is eliminated.
