Copa MX Round of 16: Tijuana vs América

Tijuana beat América by the minimum difference in the Copa MX round of sixteen.

The hosts took the initiative from the opening whistle and the Xolos dominated possession and chances. After spending much of the game in América’s defensive third, Tijuana found the breakthrough in the 28th minute.

Guido Rodríguez played in Paul Arriola, who sent his low shot past Agustín Marchesín to make it 1-0.

In the second half, the game leveled out as América pressed for a tying goal. Avilés Hurtado looked most dangerous for the Águilas, but the visitors were unable to do much to trouble Gibrán Lajud’s goal.

In the 84th minute, Víctor Malcorra nearly put the game to bed, but his shot was well-saved by Marchesín.

As referee Fernando Hernández blew the final whistle, a frustrated Pablo Aguilar headbutted him, earning himself a red card and likely a long suspension from the Disciplinary Committee.

With the 1-0 win, Tijuana advances to the quarterfinals while América is eliminated.
