Tijuana controlled the run of play in the first half, with the hosts enjoying more possession and a number of dangerous chances. Víctor Malcorra and Paul Arriola were very active going forward and the pair nearly connected to open the scoring, only for a deflection to send the ball over the bar.
However, in the second half Morelia got into the game. The visitors began to create their own chances, albeit primarily through set pieces.
In the 68th minute, Morelia took the lead. Rodolfo Vilchis combined with Jorge Zárate to play in Miguel Ángel Sansores, whose shot found the lower right corner.
Just minutes later, Morelia shocked the Xolos by making it 0-2. In the 72nd minute, Cristian Penilla finished off a cross from “Pipila” to put the Monarquía comfortably in control.
Tijuana threw everyone forward as they looked to get back into the game, and they came close through Avilés Hurtado, Freddy Martín, and Guido Rodríguez, but goalkeeper Sebastián Sosa denied them at every turn.
With the 0-2 win, Morelia advances to the semifinals while Tijuana is eliminated.
