Copa MX Semifinals: Monarcas Morelia vs Cruz Azul

Monarcas Morelia booked their spot in the Gran Final of the Clausura 2017 Copa MX with a late 1-0 victory against Cruz Azul.

It was the visiting Máquina who started the game off better, with Joao Rojas and Jorge Benítez creating some dangerous chances in the early going.

Cruz Azul’s best opportunity of the half came just after the half-hour mark, when Martín Rodríguez got his head to a cross from Ángel Mena; however, Sebastián Sosa made a good save to keep the game goalless.

Morelia’s keeper made his presence count on several occasions to keep Cruz Azul from taking the lead; the visitors controlled possession but were unable to find the breakthrough.

As time wound down and the deadlock persisted, it looked like it would take a penalty shootout to separate the sides. Then, in the 85th minute, Morelia earned a free kick in a dangerous spot. Rodolfo Vilchis, who won the foul, sent the free kick into the back of the net to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.

Cruz Azul threw everyone forward in the final minutes as they looked for a tying goal, but Sosa remained unbeatable in net and Morelia held on for the win by the minimum difference.

With the 1-0 win, Morelia advances to the final while Cruz Azul is eliminated.
