The game was initially fairly even. Although the hosts enjoyed more possession of the ball, it was the visitors who found the first chance. In the 22nd minute, Raúl Ruidíaz was in good position in the box but couldn’t make contact with the cross.
Cruz Azul had a chance of their own soon after, and they made it count. In the 29th minute, Adrián Aldrete received a long pass, took it down the left, and sent in a cross for Jorge Benítez, who made no mistake with his finish. La Máquina had the 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Morelia pushed for a tying goal, knowing that a loss could see them slip back to the foot of the relegation standings by the end of the weekend. They could have found it in the 52nd minute when Andy Polo was put in on goal, but he couldn’t put his attempt on target.
Morelia’s hopes of a comeback looked to have taken a blow in the 79th minute, when Gabriel Achilier was given a straight red card for a foul on Christian Giménez.
But just as it looked like Cruz Azul would pick up the win by the minimum difference, Morelia tied the game. In the 87th minute, Raúl Ruidíaz received the ball at the edge of the box, cut towards the middle, and sent his shot past Jesús Corona to make it 1-1.
With the 1-1 draw, Cruz Azul reaches 11 points while Morelia reaches 17.
