The visitors started the game off better, with most of the early chances falling their way. In the 12th minute, they came as close as the woodwork, with Jonathan Urretaviscaya hitting the post.
But bit by bit Santos began to take control of the game. After weathering the early storm, they created chances of their own through Julio César Furch, Gael Sandoval, and Djaniny.
Then, just before halftime, the hosts took the lead. Furch played in Djaniny, who sent his low shot to the far post, past the onrushing Óscar Pérez, to make it 1-0 for Santos.
In the second half, the Tuzos went back on the attack as they looked for a tying goal, but the Guerreros’ defense stood firm. Pachuca’s hopes of a comeback then took a blow in the 66th minute, when Hirving Lozano was given a straight red card after fouling Diego de Buen and then kicking out at the Santos player while he was on the ground.
With the man advantage, Santos looked for a second goal to put the game out of reach. They came close on a few occasions through Furch and then Osvaldo Martínez, but in the end the lone goal was enough.
With the 1-0 win, Santos reaches 19 points while Pachuca still has 18.
