Cruz Azul earned a 0-2 away win against Toluca on Thursday night to wrap up the midweek round of rescheduled Jornada 10 games. The result snaps a three-game winless streak for La Máquina while the Diablos Rojos saw their three-game winning streak brought to a halt.
Toluca was looking to open up some space at the top of the table in front of their home crowd, but the night did not go as planned for the hosts. Despite numerous injuries and absences, Cruz Azul started the game off well and even hit the crossbar in the 14th minute with a shot by Jorge Benítez.
Then, just before halftime, Toluca had a golden opportunity to take the lead after the visitors were called for a questionable foul on Pablo Barrientos in the box. Fernando Uribe stepped up to take the ensuing penalty kick, but he couldn’t put it on target and the chance went begging.
Cruz Azul made Toluca rue that missed PK when Ángel Mena gave the visitors the 0-1 lead in the 57th minute. The Diablos Rojos failed to deal with a corner kick and after a series of rebounds, Mena finished off the loose ball to put La Máquina in front.
Barrientos had a chance to tie it for Toluca in the 74th minute, but Jesús Corona did well to make the save.
Then, minutes later, Cruz Azul added to their lead. Once again a set piece proved deadly as Francisco Silva sent a free kick into the box; Alfredo Talavera misjudged it and saw the ball go through his hands and into the back of the net. 2-0.
Toluca was unable to find a response in the final ten minutes of the game while Cruz Azul was finally able to end a road winless streak that stretched all the way back to September.
With the 0-2 win, Cruz Azul reaches 14 points while Toluca still has 25.
