2017 Campeón de Campeones and SuperCopa MX Games Announced

The dates and location for the 2017 Campeón de Campeones and SuperCopa MX games have been announced, and for the second consecutive year the doubleheader will be played at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, the home of the LA Galaxy.

The games are scheduled for Sunday, July 16th, and tickets are available to the general public from www.axs.com and www.stubhubcenter.com beginning on April 20th.

Since Chivas de Guadalajara won both the Clausura 2017 Copa MX and the Clausura 2017 league title, they ceded their place in the SuperCopa to Club América.

The SuperCopa MX will open the doubleheader (5:30 PM Eastern) and will pit Querétaro, the winners of the Apertura 2016 Copa MX, against América, the team with the best record in the group stages of the Apertura 2016 and Clausura 2017 Copas.

Following that game, the winners of the Apertura 2016 and Clausura 2017 league titles will face off at 10:45 PM. Tigres UANL and Chivas de Guadalajara will reprise the Clausura 2017 Gran Final as they look to claim the title of “champion of champions”.

Both games will be broadcast live on Univision, with the Campeón de Campeones game also shown on Univision Deportes.

There is actually nothing in the official Liga MX regulations that addresses that situation, so if it comes up Liga MX has complete discretion as to who to invite instead. The two most likely scenarios I can see would be either the Liguilla runner-up or the first-placed team from the regular season.

Something similar happened in 2015; Santos Laguna won both the Apertura 2014 Copa MX and the Clausura 2015 league title, which meant they qualified for both the SuperCopa and the Campeón de Campeones. In that instance, Santos played the CdC and the winner of the Apertura 2013 cup was invited to the SuperCopa instead. It’s unclear why they went that far back instead of going for the winner of the Copa MX directly prior to Santos (Clausura 2014).
