The hosts started the game off well and they had a few chances in the early going. Then, in the 20th minute, Rodolfo Cota was called for a foul in the box on Jorge Benítez, and La Máquina was given the chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot.
Ángel Mena stepped up to take the penalty, and he sent the ball low to Cota’s left to make it 1-0 for Cruz Azul.
Soon after falling behind, Chivas suffered another setback as Miguel Ángel Ponce was given a straight red card in the 28th minute for another foul on Benítez.
Cruz Azul added to their lead in the second half, when Rafael Baca found Francisco Silva in the box and “Gato” scored to make it 2-0.
That deficit was insurmountable for a Chivas side playing with 10 men, although they were able to score a consolation goal late on when Oswaldo Alanís scored direct from a free kick to make it 2-1.
With the 2-1 win, Cruz Azul reaches 17 points while Chivas still has 25.
