Santos Laguna scored a stoppage-time goal to beat América 2-1 on Sunday night. The result keeps the Laguneros unbeaten at home this season while ending the Águilas two-game winning streak and seven-game unbeaten streak.
Santos made their home-field advantage count here and they looked much the better side in the first half. The hosts created numerous chances and out-shot América 26 to 8 over the course of the ninety minutes. Nevertheless, most of those shots were off target and when halftime rolled around the game was still deadlocked at 0-0.
In the second half, Santos continued to press. Walter Sandoval found Djaniny in the box in the 50th minute, only for Djaniny to make poor contact and sky the ball over the bar as the chance went begging.
It wasn’t until the 82nd minute that the hosts were able to open the scoring. Ulises Rivas played the ball in for Jonathan Rodríguez, whose shot beat Agustín Marchesín to make it 1-0.
América was able to rally, however, and the Águilas tied the game in the 87th minute when Oribe Peralta got his head to a corner kick to make it 1-1.
With time rapidly running out, it looked like the game would end in a draw. But then, in the 92nd minute, substitute Diego de Buen pounced on a rebound at the edge of the box and sent his shot into the back of the net to make it 2-1 for the hosts.
With the 2-1 win, Santos reaches 24 points while América still has 24.
