With the playoffs out of reach for both teams, León and Cruz Azul looked to close out their seasons on a high note. It was La Máquina who managed it, with a 1-2 come-from-behind away win against La Fiera.
The game started just about perfectly for the hosts, who earned a penalty kick in the 4th minute after a foul by Guillermo Allison. Mauro Boselli took the spot kick and converted it to make it 1-0 for León.
The lead didn’t last long, however, with Jorge Benítez tying it up in the 9th minute after he slipped his marker in the box.
Both teams had chances to find a second, but the game went into halftime still locked at 1-1.
Then, minutes into the second half, referee Jorge Antonio Pérez called another penalty, this time in favor of Cruz Azul. However, Ángel Mena missed the chance and the game remained level.
Cruz Azul rallied despite that, however, and in the 55th minute Francisco Silva sent the ball past William Yarbrough to make it 1-2.
The visitors were able to hold on to the lead, although León had a good chance to tie it up in the 82nd minute, when Germán Cano went one-on-one with Allison.
The night did end on a slightly sour note for La Máquina, however, as “Gato” Silva earned his second yellow card and was ejected in stoppage time.
With the 1-2 win, Cruz Azul reaches 21 points while León still has 20.
