The loss kept the Tiburones Rojos from challenging for their own playoff spot, but this season Veracruz’s goal was to avoid relegation, and from that perspective it’s job done for the sharks. They ultimately finished tied with Jaguares in the Tabla de Cociente but survived due to their superior goal difference.
For long stretches of the game, it looked like Veracruz would escape the Estadio Caliente with a draw, but a late bit of magic saw the Tiburones Rojos end their season with a loss.
In the 86th minute, Luis Chávez sent a great free kick past Pedro Gallese to give Tijuana the 1-0 lead. The Xolos were able to hold on to that advantage and finish top of the table for the second consecutive season.
With the 1-0 win, Tijuana reaches 31 points while Veracruz still has 21.
