Chivas de Guadalajara earned a 1-0 home victory against Atlas in the second leg of this Clásico Tapatío quarterfinal series. That win knotted the aggregate at 1-1, and with no away goals in play to serve as tiebreaker, Chivas advanced as the higher seed – third to Atlas’s sixth.
The hosts came out attacking as they looked to overturn the narrow first-leg deficit, and Chivas had the ball in the back of the net within the opening minute. However, Alan Pulido’s would-be goal was disallowed for offside.
El Rebaño continued to press, while it took Atlas a while to settle into the game and begin to create chances of their own. Cristian González was dangerous for the Rojinegros, with a pair of shots that challenged Rodolfo Cota.
But Atlas suffered a setback in the 36th minute when Leiton Jiménez was forced out of the game with a knee injury. Chivas retook control of the game as the half wound down, and in the 44th minute they found the breakthrough.
Edwin Hernández sent in a corner kick, Oswaldo Alanís jumped highest to head the ball towards goal, and Orbelín Pineda redirected it past Miguel Fraga and into the net to make it 1-0 (1-1 aggregate).
That goal forced Atlas to go on the offensive, since the tiebreakers favored Chivas, and the insertion of Matías Alustiza at halftime gave the visitors another dimension up top.
However, Atlas was unable to find the breakthrough, while Chivas continued to create chances at the other end. They hit the woodwork twice, with Fraga deflecting a shot by Carlos Fierro into the crossbar before Rodolfo Pizarro sent a bicycle kick attempt against the post.
Atlas threw everything and everyone forward in the final stages as the game came to a frenetic conclusion, but in the end the visitors were kept goalless.
With the 1-0 win (1-1 aggregate draw), Chivas advances to the semifinals while Atlas is eliminated.
