After previously announcing a new three-step anti-discrimination system to debut at the 2017 Confederations Cup, FIFA has continued its increased scrutiny of fan behavior with a warning for Mexico.
The Mexican Football Federation (FMF), which has to date amassed eight fines in World Cup qualifying for homophobic chants by supporters, has now received an official warning from FIFA for fan behavior in their opening Confederations Cup game against Portugal.
During that game, which ended in a 2-2 draw, Mexican fans continued to shout the homophobic slur “p*to” on opposition goal kicks.
After evaluating the match reports, the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Anin Yeboah, has warned the FMF “for the misconduct of a small number of Mexican fans in relation to insulting and discriminatory chants in the FIFA Confederations Cup game between Portugal and Mexico” and stated that FIFA could take further action if “this type of behavior is repeated during the competition”.
There was no mention of what that further action might consist of.
In response, Mexico posted a lengthy plea on social media directed towards the “unconditional” fans of El Tri, saying “We have the best fans in the world. It’s time to unite and demonstrate it.”
Loosely translated, the statement reads:
“Call to all the ‘Unconditionals’
To you, who always trusted that we would obtain qualification to the Confederations Cup; who didn’t doubt that we would make a game of it against the European champion; who gets excited with each of our goalkeeper’s saves; who lives for and feels every one of our team’s goals; who always believed in the comeback; who didn’t care about the cost and is now in Russia; who has never stopped believing in our National Team;
We want to ask for your help.
As you know, FIFA is taking the chant we do at every goal kick very seriously, and the possible sanctions are severe. If this behavior continues, our effort on the field won’t matter if we lose the game because of this, if the game is suspended, or if you are ejected from the stadium; we lose, you lose, we all lose.
Because we know that you are Unconditional, we trust you, we know that together we will change history.”
