Lobos BUAP twice took the lead and twice failed to hold it as they drew 2-2 with Santos Laguna in their inaugural Liga MX game. While they will be disappointed not to have been able to give their home fans a win, they did earn their first point in the first division.
Lobos opened the scoring early on with a goal in the 14th minute. Julian Quiñones’ effort was deflected past Jonathan Orozco by Jorge Enríquez to make it 1-0 for the hosts. However, the lead didn’t last long before Osvaldo Martínez made it 1-1 for Santos Laguna with his goal in the 21st minute.
Quiñones restored the lead for the licántropos just past the half-hour mark after some good play by Amaury Escoto, but once again Lobos couldn’t make the goal stand up.
Shortly before halftime, Julio César Furch made it 2-2 with his low shot from inside the box.
The frenetic pace of the game slowed somewhat in the second half, but both teams still created chances to snatch the victory. Djaniny had a great opportunity with the goalkeeper beaten, but he couldn’t get his shot on target. Then, for Lobos, Escoto tried his luck with a powerful shot from distance, but Orozco was able to deal with it.
In the end, Lobos and Santos had to settle for the draw and a share of the spoils.
With the 2-2 draw, both Lobos and Santos reach one point.
