A17 Copa MX Week 1 Review: Tuesday’s Games

Puebla 1-0 Atlante (Group 4)
Puebla beat Atlante 1-0 in the opening game of Group 4 thanks to a penalty kick late in the first half. The hosts started the game off well and could have opened the scoring in the very first minute when Gabriel Esparza found himself unmarked in the box with the ball, but he couldn’t put his shot on target.

Then, in the 41st minute, Gabriel España was called for a handball in the box. Carlos Salom stepped up to take the penalty kick and he converted it to give Puebla the 1-0 lead. The Poblanos had chances to add to their lead in the second half, but the final touch was lacking. Atlante did little to threaten a tying goal and in the end the PK was enough for Puebla.

With the 1-0 win, Puebla reaches three points while Atlante still has zero.

Querétaro 2-0 Cimarrones (Group 8)
A pair of second half goals gave Querétaro the 2-0 victory against Cimarrones in their Group 8 opener. The first half saw chances at both ends, with Édgar Benítez, Camilo Sanvezzo, and Yerson Candelo looking dangerous for the hosts and Gustavo Ramírez and Víctor Guajardo creating chances for the visitors, but ultimately the first 45 ended goalless.

In the second half, the Gallos Blancos opened the scoring in the 52nd minute through Candelo, who finished off the service from Luis Noriega to make it 1-0. Cimarrones came close to tying it in the 70th minute with Ramírez’s shot from inside the six-yard box, but Gil Alcalá made a great save to deny him. Then, in the 79th minute, Querétaro added an insurance goal through Sanvezzo, who scored a golazo of a free kick to make it 2-0.

With the 2-0 win, Querétaro reaches three points while Cimarrones still have zero.

Dorados de Sinaloa 0-2 Leones Negros (Group 1)
A goal on either side of halftime gave Leones Negros the 0-2 away win against Dorados de Sinaloa in their first Group 1 game. The visitors were given a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the 43rd minute with a penalty kick, and Jesús Vázquez converted the spot kick to make it 0-1 for the Universidad de Guadalajara.

Vázquez then completed his brace minutes after the break, when “La Joya” saw his shot from distance take a deflection to wrong-foot goalkeeper Luis Michel, giving the visitors the 0-2 lead in the 48th minute. Dorados attempted to reduce the deficit and they controlled possession for long stretches, but Leones’ defense and goalkeeper Felipe López stood firm to maintain the shutout.

With the 0-2 win, Leones Negros reach three points while Dorados still have zero.

Atlas 2-1 Potros UAEM (Group 3)
Atlas beat Potros UAEM 2-1 in this Group 3 opener, which saved all the excitement for the second half. After an even first 45, Atlas took the lead just moments into the second half. In the 47th minute, Christian Tabo converted a penalty kick to make it 1-0 for the Rojinegros.

The hosts added to their lead soon after that with Serge Njoh forcing an own-goal out of Arturo Tapia in the 54th minute to give Atlas a comfortable 2-0 lead. But Potros made a game of it when they reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the 66th minute thanks to Diego Gama’s golazo from the edge of the box. However, the visitors were unable to go on to find a tying goal as Atlas made their lead stand up.

With the 2-1 win, Atlas reaches three points while Potros still have zero.

Monarcas Morelia 2-1 Mineros de Zacatecas (Group 9)
Monarcas Morelia beat Mineros de Zacatecas 2-1 in the opening game of Group 9. The hosts took the lead just minutes after the game began, when Eduardo López finished off a cross in the third minute to make it 1-0 for Morelia. The lead didn’t last long, however, before Luis Hernández headed in the tying goal for Mineros in the 12th minute.

The decisive goal came in the 72nd minute. Carlos Guzmán played the ball to Fernando Ortiz, whose header to the far post restored Morelia’s lead. The michoacanos continued to press in search of an insurance goal while Mineros tried in vain to find another equalizer.

With the 2-1 win, Morelia reaches three points while Zacatecas still has zero.

León 3-2 Alebrijes de Oaxaca (Group 6)
León came from behind to grab a 3-2 win against Alebrijes de Oaxaca in this Group 6 opener. The visitors took the lead early on when Martin Zúñiga pounced on a rebound to make it 0-1 in just the 5th minute. Before León could react to falling behind, Alebrijes scored again, with Taufic Guarch making it 0-2 in the 10th minute.

It wasn’t until the second half that León reacted. In the 52nd minute, Jorge Pereyra reduced the deficit to 1-2 when he finished off a corner kick; then, in the 68th minute, Pereyra tied the game at 2-2 when he finished off a cross from Osvaldo Rodríguez. Pereyra was involved in the game-winning goal as well, as he crossed the ball in for Mauro Boselli to head home in the 78th minute. With that goal, León completed the comeback and took the 3-2 lead. Oaxaca was unable to shift the momentum back their way and La Fiera held on for the victory.

With the 3-2 win, León reaches three points while Alebrijes still have zero.
