A17 Copa MX Week 1 Review: Wednesday’s Games

Monterrey 3-0 Celaya (Group 2)
Monterrey earned a comfortable 3-0 win against Celaya in this Group 2 opener. The Rayados looked the better side from the beginning and they dominated possession. The visitors sat back and defended, and it took Monterrey more than half an hour to begin to seriously threaten Celaya’s goal. Rogelio Funes Mori had a would-be goal disallowed for offside and was later denied by the keeper as the first half finished goalless.

In the 51st minute, the Rayados opened the scoring, with Alfonso González’s left-footed shot making it 1-0. The chances began to come more regularly after that, but it wasn’t until the 77th minute that Funes Mori was able to make it 2-0. Carlos Sánchez wrapped up the scoring with his golazo after an assist from Neri Cardozo.

With the 3-0 win, Monterrey reaches three points while Celaya still has zero.

Zacatepec 1-1 Cruz Azul (Group 5)
Cruz Azul took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they drew 1-1 with Zacatepec in the first game of Group 5. La Máquina threatened in the 20th minute with a header by Enzo Roco and then opened the scoring in the 22nd minute through Víctor Zúñiga. The visitors took that lead into halftime, but Zacatepec tied it up just minutes into the second half.

In the 51st minute, Alejandro Zendejas pounced on a rebound from a Jorge Echavarría shot to make it 1-1. Cruz Azul looked for a response through Felipe Mora, but he couldn’t put away either of his opportunities. Goalkeeper Víctor Hernández also denied Martín Cauteruccio to ensure the visitors couldn’t retake the lead.

With the 1-1 draw, both Zacatepec and Cruz Azul reach one point.

Santos Laguna 2-0 Chivas de Guadalajara (Group 7)
Santos Laguna beat reigning champions Chivas de Guadalajara 2-0 in this Group 7 opener. After a largely even first half, two penalties in quick succession gave Santos the victory in the second half. José Manuel de la Torre sent on Julio César Furch and Djaniny, and immediately the pair began to make a difference up top for the hosts.

In the 64th minute, Djaniny won a penalty kick for Santos, which Jonathan Rodríguez converted to make it 1-0. Three minutes later, Chivas conceded another PK, this time for a foul on Furch. He stepped up to take the spot kick himself, and he converted it to make it 2-0.

With the 2-0 win, Santos reaches three points while Chivas still has zero.
