Apertura 2017 Week 2 Preview: Saturday’s Games

Querétaro vs Lobos BUAP – 6:00 PM
Querétaro (5th) beat América 0-1 in their season opener and they will now look to make it two wins in a row when they return home to La Corregidora. They picked up a midweek in the Copa MX as well, beating Cimarrones 2-0, and the Gallos Blancos will look to keep up the momentum in this one.

As for Lobos BUAP (8th), the licántropos drew 2-2 with Santos Laguna last weekend to earn their first point in the first division. They’ll now look to get their first win, and as the newly promoted side points are at a premium if they want to keep from dropping right back down to Ascenso MX. Lobos showed a lot of promise in their first game and they will look to capitalize on that in their first away game.

Cruz Azul vs Chivas de Guadalajara – 6:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Cruz Azul (4th) beat Tijuana 0-2 in their season opener and will look for a second straight win when they return home to the Estadio Azul for this one. La Máquina were one of a minority of teams to score multiple goals on opening weekend and they’ll look for a similar attacking display here. They couldn’t pick up a win in midweek, though, where they took the lead but had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Zacatecas in the Copa MX.

As for Chivas de Guadalajara (11th), el Rebaño drew 0-0 with Toluca in their first game, despite ending up playing 11 vs 10. The reigning champions will look for a better showing in this one as they go on the road. They had a midweek Copa MX game as well, and that was equally disappointing; Chivas fell 2-0 to Santos Laguna in that competition.

Monterrey vs Veracruz – 8:00 PM – Galavision
Monterrey (9th) drew 0-0 with Monarcas Morelia last weekend and now they’ll look for their first win when they return to the Estadio BBVA Bancomer for their first home game. The Rayados have traditionally been very hard to beat in their new stadium and they’ll look to use their home-field advantage to earn their first three points of the Apertura. They managed it in midweek, where they picked up a 3-0 home win against Celaya in the Copa MX.

As for Veracruz (16th), the Tiburones Rojos fell 0-2 to Necaxa in their season opener, and they will now have to look for their first points in a tough away game. They’ll also be without Cristian Pellerano, who is suspended for this one. One possible advantage for Veracruz is a bit of extra rest, as unlike Monterrey they did not have a midweek game this week.

Pachuca vs América – 8:06 PM – Univision Deportes
Pachuca (13th) fell 1-0 to Pumas UNAM in their season opener and they’ll now look for their first win of the season when they return to the Estadio Hidalgo for their first home game. The Tuzos have historically been very good at home and they have been unbeaten there in league play since October 2015. They should also be boosted by the return of several players from the Gold Cup.

As for América (14th), the Águilas fell 0-1 to Querétaro last weekend and they’ll now try to get their first win on the road in this one. América uncharacteristically missed out on the playoffs in the Clausura, and they will not want to make that a trend; Miguel Herrera will look to get the Águilas off to winning ways as soon as possible, although the Estadio Hidalgo is a hard place for visitors to get points.

Necaxa vs Tijuana – 10:00 PM – Univision / Univision Deportes
Necaxa (3rd) beat Veracruz 0-2 in their season opener and they’ll look for a similar result in their first home game. The Rayos came down to earth a little bit in the Clausura after a surprisingly strong first season, and they’ll look to replicate the success they had in the Apertura 2016 here as they continue to distance themselves from the relegation conversation.

As for Tijuana (15th), the Xolos fell 0-2 to Cruz Azul last weekend and they’ll now have to look for their first points on the road. Tijuana was the superlíder last season and losses were few and far between; however, they’ve already matched their total number of home losses from all of the Clausura. The Xolos weren’t quite so strong on the road as at home, but they will nevertheless look to bounce back from their opening loss in this one.
