Toluca vs León – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

Toluca earned their first win of the Apertura 2017 with a comfortable 3-1 victory against León. The result keeps the Diablos Rojos unbeaten to date while La Fiera has now suffered back-to-back losses.

The game was slow to develop a rhythm, with the first notable chance not coming until the 26th minute, when Fernando Uribe sent his shot crashing against the crossbar. Toluca suffered a setback just past the half-hour mark, however, when a collision with Elías Hernández left Alfredo Talavera needing treatment for an apparent knee injury. The goalkeeper was unable to continue and was subbed out for Luis García in the 37th minute.

But just two minutes after that, the Diablos opened the scoring. Rubens Sambueza found Uribe, who controlled the ball with his chest before beating William Yarbrough to make it 1-0.

Uribe added a second before halftime, when his header deflected off a defender to make it 2-0 in the 43rd minute, and Toluca looked to be in complete control.

The hosts started the second half the same way they ended the first and in the 48th minute they made it 3-0. Antonio Ríos sent a through ball into the box and Yarbrough came out but couldn’t claim it, with Sambueza coming out on top to score Toluca’s third.

León had a few opportunities to reduce the deficit, primarily through Mauro Boselli, and when they earned a penalty kick in the 79th minute it was Boselli who scored it to make it 3-1.

That goal was too little, too late for the visitors, however, and Toluca took all three points.

With the 3-1 win, Toluca reaches four points while León still has zero.
