Monarcas Morelia vs Santos Laguna – Jornada 3 Recap and Highlights

Santos Laguna took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they drew 1-1 with Monarcas Morelia. The result leaves both teams both winless and unbeaten in the Apertura 2017 after three straight draws to start the season.

Morelia came out looking to earn their first win in front of their home crowd, and Raúl Ruidíaz had the ball in the net very early on, only for the would-be goal to be disallowed for offside.

After that, both teams created chances, with the game developing a good rhythm. Santos found a pair of opportunities through Andy Polo and Djaniny, but with no end result. Morelia came close in the 37th minute, but Jonathan Orozco blocked Diego Valdés’s shot, and his follow-up attempt was just off target.

Then, somewhat against the run of play, Santos took the lead. Sebastián Sosa failed to deal with a corner kick and the ball fell to Diego de Buen. His initial shot was blocked by the defense, but he put the rebound away to make it 0-1 just before halftime.

In the second half, Morelia pressed furiously for an equalizer. Valdés in particular was dangerous up top, but all of the hosts’ chances went begging. Finally, in the 83rd minute, Jefferson Cuero sent the ball in for Gastón Lezcano – who had entered the game just a minute earlier – and Lezcano beat Orozco to make it 1-1.

With the 1-1 draw, Morelia and Santos both reach three points.
