Puebla vs Tijuana – Jornada 4 Recap and Highlights

Puebla took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they drew 1-1 with Tijuana on Friday night. The result leaves both teams still winless in the Apertura 2017, although the draw gives the Xolos their first point of the season.

The hosts will feel hard done by to end up with just a point after they had two critical offside decisions go against them; one, to deny them a goal, and the other, to gift Tijuana one. Puebla thought they had opened the scoring in the 14th minute through Carlos Salom, but the would-be goal was disallowed for a very tight offside call.

Puebla continued to press and they came close to putting the ball into the net several more times before the break. However, Gibrán Lajud was in fine form for the Xolos and the goalkeeper came up big to deny the Poblanos the breakthrough.

But just two minutes into the second half, Puebla’s persistence paid off. In the 47th minute, Damián Pérez sent a cross into the box and Christian Marrugo met it with a diving header to give La Franja the deserved 1-0 lead.

However, Tijuana tied it up in the 56th minute. A through ball found Gustavo Bou, who drove into the box and beat Moisés Muñoz to make it 1-1. Although Bou had been in an offside position when the ball was played, the flag remained down and the goal stood.

Puebla was intent on retaking the lead, but Lajud continued to make the necessary saves to deny them. Francisco Acuña had a pair of late chances to make it 2-1, but he couldn’t make the opportunities count.

With the 1-1 draw, Puebla reaches two points while Tijuana reaches one.
