Veracruz earned a 2-3 away win against Santos Laguna on Sunday night to give the Tiburones Rojos back-to-back victories in league play. The result ends Santos Laguna’s unbeaten start to the season and leaves them winless in the Apertura.
The Guerreros were looking to end a run of draws with a victory in front of their home fans, and Gael Sandoval had a chance to open the scoring in the opening minute. He got free on the right but his shot from outside the box took a deflection, sending the ball into the post and saving Veracruz from an early deficit.
Santos continued to have the better of the chances, with Julio César Furch trying his luck from distance in the 18th minute, and then Jonathan Rodríguez forcing another save out of Pedro Gallese in the 22nd. At the half-hour mark, Rodríguez played the ball in for Djaniny, whose left-footed shot was also saved by Gallese to preserve the draw.
Then, against the run of play, Veracruz took the lead. In the 34th minute, Daniel Villalva sent a cross into the box and Néstor Araujo was unable to clear it; Cristian Menéndez pounced on the loose ball to make it 0-1 for the Tiburones.
In the second half, Santos tied it up. In the 56th minute, Jorge Enríquez headed home a corner kick to make it 1-1.
But parity lasted just three minutes before the visitors reclaimed the lead. In the 59th minute, Villalva sent the ball into the box again and Adrián Luna was there to make it 1-2.
Five minutes after that, Veracruz added an insurance goal. Villalva once again had the assist as he played in Christian Váldez, who lifted the ball past the onrushing Jonathan Orozco to make it 1-3.
Santos was able to reduce the deficit, but not until deep into stoppage time. In the 95th minute, substitute Brian Lozano took the ball in midfield and drove towards goal, with his shot from outside the box beating Gallese to make it 2-3.
There was not enough time left for Santos to go on to find an equalizer, however, as Veracruz held on for the victory.
With the 2-3 win, Veracruz reaches six points while Santos Laguna still has three.
