A17 Copa MX Week 4 Review: Tuesday’s Games

Celaya 0-1 Monterrey (Group 2)
Monterrey remained unbeaten in the Copa MX with a 0-1 away win against Celaya. The result leaves Celaya winless in this competition. The game started out evenly, with possession shared and few clear chances at either end. In the 36th minute, Ángel Reyna came close to opening the scoring for the hosts, but he was denied by the post.

The pace picked up a bit in the second half, and Monterrey began to look the better side, particularly once Rogelio Funes Mori, Dorlan Pabón, and Carlos Sánchez were subbed on. In the 71st minute, the Rayados took the lead after Funes Mori finished off a rebound from close range to make it 0-1.

With the 0-1 win, Monterrey reaches seven points while Celaya still has one.

Querétaro 0-1 Pachuca (Group 8)
Pachuca remained unbeaten and ended Querétaro’s own unbeaten run with a stoppage time goal to snatch a 0-1 away win. The Tuzos traveled to Querétaro with a very young team and it was the hosts who had the better of play for much of the first half. The Gallos Blancos repeatedly tested Alfonso Blanco, but the keeper was up to the task to preserve the shutout.

In the second half, the game continued to favor Querétaro, but the hosts were unable to find the breakthrough. Then, in the 92nd minute, Erick Sánchez grabbed all three points for the Tuzos with his late golazo. The teenager danced around the defense, cut into the box, and sent his shot curling into the upper corner to make it 0-1.

With the 0-1 win, Pachuca reaches seven points while Querétaro still has four.

Puebla 1-1 Tijuana (Group 4)
Puebla took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they settled for a 1-1 draw with Tijuana. The result keeps the Xolos unbeaten in the Copa MX, while Puebla is now winless in two. The heavy rain in Puebla made for a complicated start to the game, with field conditions not ideal for good passing play. Then, in the waning moments of the half, the hosts took the lead, with Pablo Miguez making it 1-0 in the 42nd minute.

Puebla had barely taken the lead before they lost it, however, with Juan Carlos Núñez tying it up for Tijuana in the 43rd. The second half had few chances at either end as both teams seemed content to take the draw. The only real chance to change the score came in the 69th minute, when Matías Pisano forced a good save out of Fabián Villaseñor with his shot from outside the box.

With the 1-1 draw, Puebla reaches four points while Tijuana reaches five.

Santos Laguna 2-0 FC Juárez (Group 7)
Santos Laguna remained perfect in the Copa MX with a 2-0 win against FC Juárez. The result leaves the Bravos winless with three straight losses in the competition. The hosts took the lead just before halftime, with Brian Lozano sending a loss cross in for Emiliano Armenteros, who made it 1-0 in the 44th minute.

Lozano himself got on the scoreboard in the second half to add an insurance goal for Santos. In the 64th minute, a mistake in the back allowed the Uruguayan to steal the ball, head for goal, and make it 2-0. FC Juárez was unable to respond as they slumped to another loss.

With the 2-0 win, Santos reaches six points while FC Juárez still has zero.

Cruz Azul 1-0 Zacatepec (Group 5)
Cruz Azul remained unbeaten in the Copa MX and earned their first victory with a 1-0 win against Zacatepec. The result ends Zacatepec’s own unbeaten start to the competition. The visitors started the game off better and they had the first clear chance of the game in the 19th minute, when Guillermo Allison came off his line but didn’t claim the ball; Mauro Contreras picked up the loose ball but he was unable to put his shot away. However, it was the hosts who took the lead. In the 41st minute, Martín Cuateruccio finished off a pass from Rosario Cota to make it 1-0.

Víctor Zúñiga could have added an insurance goal for La Máquina just moments later, but he couldn’t put his shot on target. In the second half, Zacatepec came close to an equalizer more than once, while Cruz Azul seemed intent on shooting themselves in the foot. Rosario Cota was sent off in the 76th minute with his second yellow card and then Paco Jémez was ejected from the sideline as well. Nevertheless, Cruz Azul was able to hold on to their narrow lead.

With the 1-0 win, Cruz Azul reaches five points while Zacatepec still has four.
