Cruz Azul remained unbeaten this season and snapped a three-game winless streak with a 2-1 victory against Atlas in this game that finished 10 vs 10. The result is a third straight defeat for the Rojinegros.
The game started off perfectly for the hosts as they took the lead in just the 3rd minute. Ángel Mena got past two opponents, cut into the box, and put a shot on goal; although Miguel Ángel Fraga stopped the initial shot, the ball fell for Édgar Méndez, who headed Cruz Azul in front.
It didn’t take long for La Máquina to find a second. In the 14th minute, Francisco Silva played in Felipe Mora, who made it 2-0 with a clinical finish.
There were some scary moments soon after that as a nasty collision of heads between Jesús Corona and Milton Caraglio left the Atlas striker apparently knocked out cold. After several minutes of treatment, he was conscious as medical staff carted him off the field, with Fidel Martínez coming on in his place.
Then, first Cruz Azul and then Atlas went down to 10 men as Omar Mendoza was sent off with a second yellow in the 29th before Jaine Barreiro earned a straight red ten minutes later.
In the second half, the sky opened and the torrential rain had an effect on both teams’ play. Nevertheless, Atlas was able to reduce the deficit with a golazo by Matías Alustiza in the 67th minute, although they were unable to go on to find an equalizer.
With the 2-1 win, Cruz Azul reaches nine points while Atlas still has six.
