The game started with chances at both ends. Rodolfo Vilchis forced a good save out of Agustín Marchesín before the woodwork denied Carlos Darwin Quintero at the other end. Alejandro Díaz then tried his luck, but Sebastián Sosa was up to the task as the game remained goalless.
Then, in the 28th minute, the michoacanos found the breakthrough. Following a corner kick, the ball fell to Sebastián Vegas in the six-yard box, and he backheeled the pall past Marchesín to make it 1-0.
In the second half, in the pouring rain, América began to dominate. The Águilas had more possession and kept the ball primarily in Morelia’s defensive third; nevertheless, the hosts stood firm defensively and the visitors were unable to find an equalizer.
They came within inches of one in the 82nd minute, when Silvio Romero sent a free kick agonizingly wide of the post with Sosa frozen on his line.
Then, in stoppage time, Paul Aguilar was called for a handball in the box, giving Morelia the chance to seal the victory from the penalty spot. Raúl Ruidíaz converted the spot kick to make it 2-0.
With the 2-0 win, Morelia reaches nine points while América still has 13.
