Lobos BUAP saw their winless streak stretch to five games as they fell 1-3 to Monarcas Morelia. The licántropos slipped to the foot of the relegation standings with the loss while the michoacanos have now won three in a row.
The field was in poor condition with puddles and divots, and it was that state that allowed Morelia to open the scoring in the 13th minute. Francisco Rodríguez’s attempted clearance deflected off Raúl Ruidíaz; José Francisco Canales couldn’t corral the ball on the sloppy ground and Ruidíaz pounced to send the ball into the empty net. 0-1.
Three minutes later, Ruidíaz had his second. The Peruvian headed home a ball from Carlos Guzmán to put Morelia comfortably ahead in the 16th minute.
Lobos attempted to mount a comeback, but the field conditions stymied them; then, in the 30th minute, Morelia scored again to put the game to bed. Diego Valdés got his foot to a long cross and sent the ball arcing over Canales to make it 0-3.
But the hosts started the second half off well, and they reduced the deficit just a minute in. In the 46th minute, Luis Advícula surprised Sebastián Sosa with a shot from distance to make it 1-3.
That goal inspired Lobos, who began pressing with more intensity. They came close to scoring a second almost immediately, but that time Sosa made the save. They had another good chance late on, when Julian Quiñones saw his shot cleared off the line in the 86th minute, but that was as close as they could come.
Lobos then went down to 10 men in stoppage time when Rodrigo Godínez earned a straight red.
With the 1-3 win, Morelia reaches 12 points while Lobos still have eight.
