The game started off perfectly for the Águilas, who took the lead in just the 5th minute. Oribe Peralta played in Silvio Romero, who got around his defenders and scored with a shot to the near post. 1-0.
Romero had the ball in the net again just two minutes later, but that would-be goal was disallowed for offside. América then came close to a second through William da Silva, but his header went just high.
It wasn’t until the second half that Veracruz began to look dangerous. The visitors started the half off strongly and in the 56th minute Christian Valdez sent a promising cross into the box for Daniel Villalva, but Agustín Marchesín was there to make the save.
Then, in the 68th minute, América added to their lead. Following a corner kick, Bruno Valdéz headed the ball on and Romero finished it off with a diving header to make it 2-0.
Veracruz was unable to reduce the deficit as América cruised to a comfortable victory. The night finished on an extra sour note for the Tiburones as Kristian Álvarez was given a straight red card in the waning moments.
With the 2-0 win, América reaches 16 points while Veracruz still has 10.
