Apertura 2017 Week 9 Preview: Saturday’s Games

Cruz Azul vs Santos Laguna – 6:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Cruz Azul (7th) drew 0-0 with Puebla last weekend to remain unbeaten this season but also winless in three. La Máquina has three times as many draws as wins in the Apertura – six and two, respectively – and they need to start picking up all three points if they want to stay in the top eight. They do have the second-best defensive record in the league, though, and they’ll look to get back to winning ways when they return home to the Estadio Azul for this one.

As for Santos Laguna (14th), the Laguneros drew 0-0 with Toluca last weekend to remain unbeaten in three but also winless at home this season. Their lone win of the Apertura came on the road, and they’ll look for another one here. They picked up an away win in the Copa MX in midweek, where they beat FC Juárez 0-3.

Monterrey vs Atlas – 8:00 PM – Galavision
Monterrey (1st) beat Necaxa 1-0 last weekend to remain unbeaten this season. The result also kept the Rayados perfect at home with four wins in four games. They won in the Estadio BBVA Bancomer in midweek as well, when they beat Pumas UNAM 3-1 in the Copa MX. Monterrey has the best attacking record and best defensive record in the league and they’ll look to increase the gap at the top of the table in this one.

As for Atlas (16th), the Rojinegros did not play last weekend as their game against Tigres UANL was postponed. In their last league match, they fell 2-1 to Necaxa to keep them winless in five. They did pick up a win in the Copa MX in midweek, though, where they beat Potros UAEM 1-2. They’ll look to build on that victory to end their league winless streak, but they’ll be facing a very tough opponent in this one.

León vs Pachuca – 8:06 PM – Univision / Univision Deportes
León (9th) beat Querétaro 1-2 last weekend to give La Fiera a two-game road winning streak. León is still winless at home this season, though, where they’ve earned just one point from four games. They’ll look to snap that streak when they face their sibling club in this one, and they’ll have the advantage of some extra rest as they did not have a midweek game.

As for Pachuca (11th), the Tuzos fell 1-3 to Chivas de Guadalajara last weekend to give them a two-game losing streak. They did win in midweek, though, with a 2-1 victory against Cimarrones in the Copa MX. The Tuzos will look to get back to winning ways here and add to León’s home struggles.

Necaxa vs Puebla – 10:00 PM – ESPN Deportes
Necaxa (8th) fell 1-0 to Monterrey last weekend to end a three-game unbeaten streak. They lost in midweek as well, where they fell 2-1 to Monarcas Morelia in the Copa MX. The Rayos will look to get back to winning ways when they return home for this one, and they have a two-game league unbeaten streak in the Estadio Victoria.

As for Puebla (18th), the Poblanos drew 0-0 with Cruz Azul last weekend to end their two-game losing streak but keep them winless in three. They lost in the Copa MX in midweek, though, where they fell 2-0 to Atlante. Puebla has struggled to get their season going and they have the worst goalscoring record in the league; they’re averaging just one goal every two games and they need to start scoring – and winning – to strengthen their position in the relegation standings.

Chivas de Guadalajara vs Pumas UNAM – 10:06 PM – Univision / Univision Deportes
Chivas de Guadalajara (15th) beat Pachuca 1-3 last weekend to give them their first win of the season. El Rebaño will now be looking for their first home win when they return to the Estadio Chivas for this one. Goalscoring has been a problem for Chivas, but they scored more goals last weekend than in their four home games combined, and they’ll hope to keep the floodgates open in this one.

As for Pumas UNAM (17th), the universitarios fell 0-2 to Tijuana last weekend to extend their losing streak to four games. They lost in midweek as well, where they fell 3-1 to Monterrey in the Copa MX. It’s just goal difference keeping Pumas out of last place at the moment and they could find themselves propping up the table by the end of the weekend. They’ll be looking to avoid that by earning their first road win of the season in this one.
