Monterrey created chances from the beginning as the highest-scoring attack in the league looked to find the breakthrough. Rogelio Funes Mori was particularly active, and in the 7th minute it looked like he would open the scoring as Monterrey earned a penalty kick after a foul in the box by José Madueña.
However, Funes Mori couldn’t put the penalty on target and the game remained 0-0.
Atlas then came close with a header by Matías Alustiza that went just over the bar in the 19th minute.
But in the 23rd minute, Monterrey made their pressure count as they took the lead. Avilés Hurtado beat Miguel Ángel Fraga with his shot from outside the box to make it 1-0 with his golazo.
The Rojinegros quickly responded, however, with Brayan Garnica finishing off a cross from Luis Reyes to make it 1-1 in the 29th minute.
In the second half, Monterrey continued to dominate as they looked to retake the lead. They thought they had in the 69th minute, but Hurtado’s would-be goal was disallowed for offside. Finally, in the 84th minute, Funes Mori beat Fraga to a cross and headed it into the empty net to make it 2-1.
With the 2-1 win, Monterrey reaches 23 points while Atlas still has seven.
