Chivas de Guadalajara vs Pumas UNAM – Jornada 9 Recap and Highlights

Pumas UNAM took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they drew 1-1 with Chivas de Guadalajara. The result leaves El Rebaño winless at home this season but unbeaten in four overall, while the universitarios ended a four-game losing streak but remain winless in five.

Chivas had the better of the run of play to start and they generated several dangerous chances. The clearest came in the 23rd minute, when Oswaldo Alanís sent a good cross into the box for Ángel Zaldívar, but Alfredo Saldívar was there to make the save.

Then, in the 35th minute, the visitors took the lead from a set piece. Pumas had a corner kick and although Rodolfo Cota made the initial save on the ensuing header, the keeper couldn’t hold on to the ball. Gerardo Alcoba pounced on the loose ball to make it 0-1.

Pumas took the lead into halftime, but in the second stanza Chivas looked for a response. They found one in the 60th minute. Substitute Jesús Godínez, who had entered the game just three minutes earlier, received a layoff at the top of the box and sent his powerful shot rocketing into the corner to make it 1-1.

Back on level footing, Chivas pressed insistently forward as they looked to complete the turnaround. But despite out-shooting Pumas by a wide margin, they were unable to find a second goal.

With the 1-1 draw, Chivas reaches nine points while Pumas reach seven.
