Pumas UNAM took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Cruz Azul came back for an emphatic 1-4 away win. The result is a second straight loss for the universitarios – and leaves them winless in seven – while La Máquina ended a four-game road winless streak.
This was really an away game for both teams, as it was held in Querétaro’s Estadio La Corregidora due to the recent earthquakes that struck Mexico. The game started off at a good pace and Cruz Azul had a few early chances through Mauro Formica and Adrián Aldrete, who hit the crossbar.
However, it was Pumas who opened the scoring. In the 20th minute, Luis Quintana finished off a corner kick to put the universitarios ahead, 1-0.
Cruz Azul tied it up before halftime, though, with Martín Rodríguez finishing off a cross from Édgar Méndez to make it 1-1 in the 40th minute.
La Máquina then went ahead just minutes into the second half. In the 47th minute, Cruz Azul mounted a quick counterattack with Ángel Mena finding Rodríguez, who chipped Alfredo Saldívar to score his second of the game.
Cruz Azul didn’t look back after taking the lead and they added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute. Mena sent in a dangerous cross from the left and Felipe Mora was there to finish off the service and make it 1-3.
Mora then scored his second after Pumas failed to clear a corner kick. After a series of rebounds, the ball fell to Mora, and he sent it home to give La Máquina a comprehensive 1-4 lead in the 74th minute.
With the 1-4 win, Cruz Azul reaches 18 points while Pumas still have seven.
