Toluca got back to winning ways with a comfortable 3-1 home victory against 10-man Lobos BUAP. The result is a second straight loss for the licántropos, who have dropped into 15th in the relegation standings with the defeat.
The Diablos Rojos took advantage of a set piece to open the scoring in the 13th minute. Alexis Canelo got his head to a corner kick and sent the ball past Jorge Villalpando to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
Toluca then had a great chance to make it 2-0 in the 20th minute, when they mounted a quick counterattack following a Lobos corner. Rubens Sambueza drove into the box, but his last touch betrayed him as the ball went out over the end-line.
Lobos looked for an equalizer through Julian Quiñones, but the striker was largely starved of service. It wasn’t until late in the half that the Colombian was able to test Luis García, and the keeper made the save.
Early in the second half, Lobos were reduced to 10 men when César Cercado received his second yellow card of the game. Down a goal and down a man, the night looked grim for the visitors.
It took Toluca just minutes to make their numerical advantage count as Osvaldo González headed the ball home – again from a corner kick – in the 51st minute to make it 2-0.
Then, in the 64th minute, Alexis Vega got on the score sheet to make it 3-0, with that goal coming more than a year after his last one due to a lengthy injury layoff.
The game was done and dusted at that point, but Lobos salvaged a little pride with a consolation goal in the 90th minute to ruin Toluca’s clean sheet. Diego Jiménez finished the ball off after García could only clear it as far as the center of the box, making it 3-1 late on.
With the 3-1 win, Toluca reaches 22 points while Lobos still have 14.
