Chivas de Guadalajara took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Atlante came back for a 1-1 draw to send this Copa MX quarterfinal to a penalty shootout. The Potros completed the comeback from the spot, winning the shootout 5-3 to advance to the semifinals, while reigning cup champion Chivas was eliminated.
The hosts had several good chances to open the scoring in the first half, but the breakthrough didn’t come until the 48th minute. Carlos Cisneros took the ball to the end-line before sending a low cross to the far post where Carlos Fierro finished it off to make it 1-0.
But Atlante seized one of their few opportunities to tie the game in the 64th minute. Cristian Tarragona headed home a good cross from the left to make it 1-1 and neither team could go on to break the deadlock.
With regulation ending 1-1, the game moved on to penalties. Atlante was perfect from the spot, with Paul Uscanga, Óscar Uscanga, Carlos Cauich, Alan Zamora, and Ernesto Reyes all converting for the Potros. Chivas made their first three kicks – Carlos Salcido, Hedgardo Marín, and Ángel Zaldívar- but Rodolfo Pizarro couldn’t convert his.
With the 1-1 draw (5-3 shootout win), Atlante advances to the semifinals while Chivas is eliminated.
