Pumas UNAM vs Santos Laguna – Jornada 16 Recap and Highlights

Santos Laguna twice took the lead and twice lost it as Pumas UNAM came back for a 2-2 draw. The result snaps a two-game losing streak for the universitarios but leaves them winless in three, while the Laguneros remain unbeaten in four.

Neither team could create many chances of note in the first half, which was disjointed and finished 0-0. It wasn’t until the 54th minute that Santos used a set piece to take the lead.

The visitors had a corner kick that was partly cleared; but Osvaldo Martínez sent the ball back into the mixer and Julio César Furch headed it home to make it 0-1 for Santos Laguna.

Pumas tied the game ten minutes later through a set piece of their own. Alan Mendoza lined up a free kick and sent it unerringly into the net to make it 1-1.

Santos reacted quickly, however, and retook the lead just four minutes later. In the 69th minute, Djaniny finished off a good passing sequence with his point-blank shot to give Santos the 1-2 lead.

The flurry of goals died down after that, and as time wore on it looked like Santos would hold on to the victory. But in the 84th minute, Pablo Barrera played in Jesús Gallardo, whose flubbed his initial back-heeled attempt but gathered the ball for a second attempt, which he finished to make it 2-2.

With the 2-2 draw, Pumas reach 12 points while Santos reaches 17.
