Copa MX Semifinals: Monterrey vs América – Recap and Highlights

Monterrey booked their spot in the Gran Final of the Apertura 2017 Copa MX after beating América 3-0 on penalties following a 0-0 draw in regulation.

Both teams came out attacking, and the Rayados looked to make their home-field advantage count. Early on, Dorlan Pabón hit the crossbar as Monterrey came close to taking the lead.

Then, in the 28th minute, Miguel Ángel Samudio became the hero for América as he cleared a header by Rogelio Funes Mori off the line with the goalkeeper beaten.

The Rayados kept the pressure on in the second half, and Óscar Jiménez was kept busy in goal for the Águilas as he repeatedly denied Monterrey the breakthrough.

Then, in the 87th minute, referee Óscar Macías Romo awarded a penalty to Monterrey. Dorlan Pabón stepped up to take it, but Jiménez made the save to keep it 0-0.

With the game still 0-0 at the end of regulation, it went to a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Pabón took the first PK, only to send it wide. Monterrey’s next three kickers, Rogelio Funes Mori, Leonel Vangioni, and Nicolás Sánchez, all converted their kicks, while none of América’s shooters, Cecilio Domínguez, Alejandro Díaz, and Diego Lainez, managed to score, giving the Rayados the 3-0 win.

With the 0-0 draw (3-0 shootout win), Monterrey advances to the final while América is eliminated.
