Semifinal Second Leg: Monterrey vs Monarcas Morelia – Recap and Highlights

Monterrey earned a comprehensive 4-0 victory against Monarcas Morelia in the second leg of their semifinal series to put the Rayados into the Gran Final with a 5-0 aggregate win.

It didn’t take the Rayados long to add to their aggregate lead, with Monterrey making it 1-0 (2-0) in just the 9th minute. Hugo González sent a long clearance to Rogelio Funes Mori, who let the ball bounce and then sent his volleyed shot past Sebastián Sosa.

Then, in the 11th minute, Monterrey had the ball in the net again only for the would-be goal to be disallowed for offside.

In the 17th minute, Morelia had a golden opportunity to get back into the series when José María Basanta was called for a handball in the box. Raúl Ruidíaz stepped up to take the penalty, but Hugo González saved it to keep Monterrey in front.

Moments later, Monterrey won a penalty at the other end after a foul by Gabriel Achilier. Carlos Sánchez stepped up and sent his shot into the upper corner to make it 2-0 (3-0).

By the half-hour mark, the Rayados had completely taken control of the series. Neri Cardozo sent a free kick to the far post; Sosa couldn’t make the catch and the dropped ball fell for Funes Mori to make it 3-0 (4-0) in the 29th minute.

In the second half, Monterrey kept the pressure on against a demoralized Morelia and in the 52nd minute Funes Mori finished his hat-trick with an assist from Dorlan Pabón to make it 4-0 (5-0) for the Rayados.

Morelia was completely unable to react and the hosts saw out the rest of the game in front of a raucous crowd in the Estadio BBVA Bancomer. Monterrey will now face rivals Tigres UANL in the Gran Final.

With the 4-0 (5-0 aggregate) victory, Monterrey advances to the final while Morelia is eliminated.
