Tigres UANL beat rivals Monterrey 2-1 in Sunday’s second leg (3-2 aggregate) to win the Apertura 2017 league title.
The universitarios entered the Liguilla as the second seed, and they advanced past seventh-seeded León and third-seeded América in the quarter- and semi-finals, respectively, to set up a meeting with superlíder Monterrey in the Gran Final.
A 1-1 first leg draw kept everything up in the air for the second leg of this historic Clásico Regio final, where Tigres earned a 2-1 away win to lift the title.
The Apertura 2017 league title is Tigres’ sixth. They previously won the league in the 1977-78, 1981-82, Apertura 2011, Apertura 2015, and Apertura 2016 seasons. This is coach Ricardo Ferretti’s seventh title with Tigres and his fourth league title with the club. It is his sixth Liga MX title overall.
