The Tuzos’ first good opportunity came in the 25th minute from a corner kick. Ángelo Sagal got his head to the ball but couldn’t get his header on target; the ball fell to Franco Jara at the back post, but he mis-hit it to keep it 0-0.
The hosts finally found the breakthrough in the 56th minute. Avilés Hurtado received a through ball into the box where he went one-on-one with the onrushing keeper, beating Blanco to make it 1-0 for the Rayados.
Pachuca immediately began to look for an equalizer. The Tuzos created several good chances, primarily through Jara and Keisuke Honda, but the breakthrough wouldn’t come for the visitors.
Monterrey’s defense stood firm and in the end Hurtado’s lone goal stood up to crown the Rayados the Apertura 2017 Copa MX champions.
