León picked up a 1-2 away win against Atlas in their season opener on Friday night, making it the first time La Fiera has won in the Estadio Jalisco since 2013, while the Rojinegros were unable to overcome a poor start in front of their home crowd.
León created the first chance of the game through Luis Montes, and although Miguel Ángel Fraga was able to keep that shot out, it wasn’t long before the visitors opened the scoring. In the 19th minute, Mauro Boselli received the ball in the box, brought it down, got past the goalkeeper, and made it 0-1.
La Fiera looked to press their advantage and Fraga was called into action again in the 24th minute – this time successfully – when Juan Cornejo tried his luck from distance. However, León scored again soon after that, with Andrés Andrade’s low shot making it 0-2 in the 29th minute.
Atlas rallied towards the end of the half, and Brayan Garnica was able to reduce the deficit in the the 45th minute. New signing Ángelo Henríquez got the ball to Garnica at the top of the box, and he beat William Yarbrough to make it 1-2.
That goal gave the Rojinegros something to build on in the second half, but they were ultimately unable to go on to tie the game. They came close in the 68th minute through substitute Ravel Morrison, who hit the post, and then again in the 72nd minute when Milton Caraglio saw his header well-saved by Yarbrough.
With the 1-2 win, León reaches three points while Atlas still has zero.
