C18 Copa MX Week 1 Review: Tuesday’s Games

Zacatepec 3-1 Murciélagos (Group 6)
Murciélagos took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Zacatepec came back for a 3-1 win in the opening match of the Clausura 2018 Copa MX. The visitors surprised Zacatepec by taking the lead in just the 8th minute when Rodolfo Galindo assisted Julián Cardozo to make it 0-1. Murciélagos had a golden opportunity to make it 0-2 just minutes later when they received a penalty after Francis Afriyie was fouled in the box. However, Luis Cárdenas saved the spot kick.

The PK save was a turning point as Zacatepec then gained the momentum. In the 15th minute, they tied it up through Juan Neira’s diving header. Despite having the majority of possession after that, it wasn’t until the second half that they took the lead. In the 66th minute, Armando González made it 2-1 for the hosts; then, in the 76th, Sefano Rodríguez added an insurance goal with his shot from distance to make it 3-1.

With the 3-1 win, Zacatepec reaches three points while Murciélagos still have zero.

Monarcas Morelia 3-0 Cimarrones (Group 9)
A pair of early goals and a late one gave Monarcas Morelia a comfortable 3-0 victory against Cimarrones in their Copa MX debut. Morelia’s first attack ended up in the back of the net in just the 2nd minute, when Salvador Reyes assisted Miguel Sansores, whose header made it 1-0. Then, in the 8th minute, Morelia made it 2-0 with another header by Sansores, this time assisted by Fernando Ortiz. Cimarrones were unable to react after falling into such an early hole, and Morelia controlled the run of play.

In the second half, Morelia took their foot off the gas a little and Cimarrones began to find a few opportunities to reduce the deficit, but they were unable to capitalize on them. Instead, in the 80th minute, substitute José Luis Chávez put the game completely out of reach when he headed home a cross by Reyes to make it 3-0.

With the 3-0 win, Morelia reaches three points while Cimarrones still have zero.

León 1-0 Venados (Group 1)
León edged Venados by the minimum difference with a late goal in this hard-fought Group 1 game. The visitors were well-organized defensively and rebuffed attempts by Mauro Boselli and Álvaro Ramos to open the scoring. León began to try their luck from outside the box, but those shots did little to trouble Matías Draghi.

In the second half, Guillermo Burdisso – returning after more than six months out with a knee injury – put the ball into the net for León, but his would-be goal was disallowed for offside. It was an indication of things to come, however. In the 80th minute, La Fiera finally found the breakthrough when a cross by Iván Piris deflected its way to Boselli, who sent it home.

With the 1-0 win, León reaches three points while Venados still have zero.
