C18 Copa MX Week 1 Review: Wednesday’s Games

Toluca 2-2 Mineros de Zacatecas
Both teams had the lead at one time or another, but in the end Toluca and Mineros de Zacatecas had to settle for a 2-2 draw in this Group 4 game. The visitors surprised Toluca by taking the lead in just the 6th minute, when Guillermo Martínez received the ball at the top of the box, cut inside, and made it 0-1 for Mineros. But the Diablos Rojos tied it up before halftime, with Ángel Reyna playing a free kick to Alexis Canelo, whose low shot went through the wall to make it 1-1 in the 31st minute.

Then, in the second half, Toluca took the lead through Luis Quiñones, who found the left-hand corner in the 59th minute. But the hosts relaxed after taking the lead, which allowed Mineros to score a late equalizer. In the 83rd minute, Miguel Velázquez played in Eder Cruz, whose first-time shot made it 2-2.

With the 2-2 draw, Toluca and Mineros both reach one point.

Correcaminos 2-1 Dorados de Sinaloa
Dorados de Sinaloa took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Correcaminos earned a 2-1 victory in this Group 3 game. The visitors struck early on, with Josepablo Monreal giving the Gran Pez the 0-1 lead in the 11th minute with his shot from inside the box. Dorados took that lead into the second half, but Correcaminos turned it all around in the final 15 minutes of the game.

In the 75th minute, Óscar Sánchez tied the game 1-1 and the Roadrunners were then able to snatch the comeback victory in the final minutes. Substitute Walter Chala completed the turnaround in the 89th minute to give the home team a winning start to the cup competition.

With the 2-1 win, Correcaminos reaches three points while Dorados still have zero.

Alebrijes de Oaxaca 1-0 Cruz Azul
Alebrijes de Oaxaca beat Cruz Azul by the minimum difference in this Group 2 game. Both teams had early chances, and the visitors even had the ball in the net, but Edgar Méndez’s would-be goal was disallowed for offside. The teams traded chances throughout the first half, but neither could break the deadlock.

Then, at the start of the second half, Alebrijes took the lead. Tauffic Guarch sent in a cross from the right and Martín Zúñiga was there to beat Guillermo Allison and give the hosts the 1-0 lead. Cruz Azul looked for a response and once again they had the ball in the back of the net, but once again it was disallowed.

With the 1-0 win, Alebrijes reach three points while Cruz Azul still has zero.

Atlas 0-1 Veracruz
Veracruz earned a 0-1 away win against Atlas in this Group 7 game. The Tiburones Rojos took the lead in the 16th minute when Jefferson Murillo played a long ball into the box. Miscommunication between Atlas’s defense and debutant goalkeeper Cristopher Toselli allowed Omar Marrufo to take advantage and make it 0-1.

Atlas looked for a response and had several good chances to equalize, but Veracruz’s defense stood firm. The Rojinegros pressed until the end but they could never find the breakthrough.

With the 0-1 win, Veracruz reaches three points while Atlas still has zero.

San Luis 3-4 Celaya
In this seven-goal thriller, Celaya earned a 3-4 away win against San Luis in their Group 8 debut. The visitors opened the scoring early on, with Pablo Ruíz making it 0-1 in the 10th minute. San Luis was able to tie it up in the 26th minute, however, when Arturo Alvarado received a through ball and made it 1-1. But the Toros reclaimed the lead in the 36th minute through Edson Gutiérrez, who finished off a rebound from the keeper. That lead lasted just three minutes, though, before San Luis tied it up 2-2 through Iván Pineda.

Celaya once again took the lead just before halftime; in the 45th minute, Pablo Ruíz scored his second of the night to make it 2-3 for the visitors. They looked to ensure the result in the second half as Kevin Favela made it 2-4 in the 77th minute. But San Luis guaranteed an electric finish when they reduced the deficit to 3-4 in the 82nd minute through Jonathan Espericueta. However, the hosts were unable to find yet another equalizer and Celaya claimed the win.

With the 3-4 win, Celaya reaches three points while San Luis still has zero.

FC Juárez 3-1 Lobos BUAP
FC Juárez players scored all four goals as they beat Lobos BUAP 3-1 in this Group 5 game. Omar Flores, making his debut for the Bravos, opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he finished off a corner kick.  Then, late in the half, Juárez added to their lead through Raúl Enríquez, whose free kick made it 2-0.

Lobos looked for a response in the second half, and in the 67th minute their pressure forced an own-goal out of the unfortunate William Decas to make it 2-1. Lobos were unable to go on to find an equalizer, however, and Juárez put the game out of reach with a penalty kick in stoppage time, converted by Leandro Carrijo to make it 3-1.

With the 3-1 win, Juárez reaches three points while Lobos still have zero.
