Clausura 2018 Week 3 Preview: Friday’s Games

Puebla vs Veracruz – 8:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Puebla (11th) fell 1-0 to Monarcas Morelia last weekend to end their winning start to the Clausura 2018 season. The Poblanos will look to get back on track when they return home to the Estadio Cuauhtémoc for this one, where they are unbeaten this season. They picked up a win in midweek as well with a 1-3 away victory against Cruz Azul in the Copa MX. This is an important game in terms of relegation, with Puebla currently sitting three spots above Veracruz in the Tabla de Cociente.

As for Veracruz (16th), the Tiburones Rojos fell 0-2 to Monterrey last weekend to keep them winless this season. They also fell in the Copa MX in midweek, where they suffered a 0-2 loss to Tampico Madero. Veracruz needs to start picking up points quickly before the gap between them and safety widens even further, and picking up points against the other teams in the relegation conversation is especially valuable. The Tiburones have yet to score a goal this season, though, and of course they can’t win if they can’t score.

Atlas vs Toluca – 10:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Atlas (17th) fell 3-1 to Pumas UNAM last weekend to give the Rojinegros back-to-back losses to start the season. Atlas then parted ways with coach José Guadalupe Cruz, and they’ll now look for their first points of the season under the direction of interim coach Gerardo Espinoza. They’ll hope that returning home to the Estadio Jalisco will give them the boost they need to get their season off the mark, although they had a mixed home record last season.

As for Toluca (14th), the Diablos Rojos fell 3-1 to León last weekend to remain winless this season. Toluca will look for their first victory when they visit a struggling Atlas side, but the Diablos did not do well on their travels last season, with just one win away from the Estadio Nemesio Diez. They will also be without the suspended Fernando Uribe for this one.
