Clausura 2018 Week 3 Preview: Saturday’s Games

Querétaro vs Tijuana – 6:00 PM – Galavisión
Querétaro (9th) beat Lobos BUAP 0-2 last weekend to give the Gallos Blancos their first win of the season – and a little breathing room in the relegation standings. They earned another win in the Copa MX in midweek, where they beat Monarcas Morelia 3-1. Querétaro will look to keep the good results coming here, although they will be without the suspended Edson Puch for this one.

As for Tigres UANL (10th), the universitarios beat Santos Laguna 2-1 last weekend to similarly earn their first win of the season. The reigning champions will now look for their first away win when they visit Querétaro here. Tigres will be better-rested than their opponent as they had no midweek game.

Cruz Azul vs León – 6:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Cruz Azul (3rd) came from behind to beat Chivas de Guadalajara 1-3 last weekend, giving La Máquina their first win of the season. They are unbeaten in league play but not unbeaten in all competitions after they suffered a 1-3 loss to Puebla in the Copa MX in midweek. Cruz Azul drew their first home game and will now look for their first home win in this one.

As for León (2nd), La Fiera beat Toluca 3-1 last weekend to remain perfect this season with two wins out of two. They fell in the Copa MX in midweek, however, where they lost 2-1 to Cafetaleros. León will look to make it three straight league wins here as they aim to move into first place in the table.

Monterrey vs Tijuana – 8:00 PM – Univision / Univision Deportes
Monterrey (4th) beat Veracruz 0-2 last weekend to remain unbeaten this season. They earned a win in midweek as well, as they came back to beat Dorados de Sinaloa 1-2 in the Copa MX. After those two away wins, the Rayados will now look for their first home win as they return to the Estadio BBVA Bancomer for this one.

As for Tijuana (7th), the Xolos beat Necaxa 1-0 last weekend to likewise keep them unbeaten in the Clausura 2018. They’ll now look for their first road win when they visit the Rayados, but the BBVA Bancomer is a hard place for visitors to pick up points. Tijuana will have the advantage of more rest, however, as they did not play in midweek. They also have one of the best defensive records of the young season with back-to-back clean sheets.

Pachuca vs Lobos BUAP – 8:06 PM – ESPN Deportes
Pachuca (12th) came from behind to draw 2-2 with América last weekend, which gave the Tuzos their first point of the season but leaves them still looking for their first win. They are winless in all competitions after a 0-1 loss to San Luis in the Copa MX in midweek. Pachuca will look to get their season on track when they return home to the Estadio Hidalgo for this one, where they’ll be facing a similarly struggling team.

As for Lobos BUAP (18th), the licántropos fell 0-2 to Querétaro last weekend to give them back-to-back losses. Lobos can’t afford to keep dropping points, given their delicate positioning in the relegation standings, and they’ll look to take advantage of a Pachuca side that hasn’t been looking their best. They earned their first win in all competitions this week as they beat Pumas UNAM 2-0 in in the Copa MX, and they’ll look to build on that result here.

Necaxa vs Chivas de Guadalajara – 10:00 PM – Univision / Univision Deportes
Necaxa (13th) fell 1-0 to Tijuana last weekend to end their unbeaten start to the season. The Rayos are still looking for their first win, but they picked up an emphatic 5-0 victory against Zacatepec in the Copa MX in midweek. Necaxa will look to carry that form over to league play here, where they are still waiting for their first goal.

As for Chivas de Guadalajara (15th), el Rebaño fell 1-3 to Cruz Azul last weekend to likewise leave them looking for their first win. Chivas has scored in both of their games to date, but their defense hasn’t been able to keep a clean sheet. They’ll look to change that against Necaxa’s misfiring attack in this one, and they’ll be the more rested team as they did not have a midweek game.
