Atlas vs Toluca – Jornada 3 Recap and Highlights

Despite finishing the game with 10 men, Toluca did enough to earn a 1-3 away win against Atlas. The result is the first win of the season for the Diablos Rojos, while the Rojinegros remain winless in the Clausura 2018.

The visitors took control of the game early and tested Cristopher Toselli with some early chances, primarily through Luis Quiñones and Alexis Canelo. The opening goal came in the 21st minute, when Pablo Barrientos nutmegged debutant defender José Monroy and sent a low cross into the box for Canelo, who made it 0-1 for Toluca.

Soon after that, Quiñones made it 0-2 with his shot from distance in the 26th minute.

Atlas made two halftime substitutions as they looked to get back into the game, and they reduced the deficit just one minute after the restart. In the 46th minute, Ravel Morrison beat Luis García with his shot from inside the box to make it 1-2.

Although the hosts were now within touching distance, Toluca managed the game and kept Atlas from seriously threatening an equalizer.

Then, in the 69th minute, Toluca went down to 10 men as Quiñones picked up his second yellow card of the game. Minutes later, a furious Hernán Cristante was ejected from the sidelines to leave the visitors without their coach as well.

Atlas nearly equalized in the 80th minute when Angelo Henríquez sent his header just over the crossbar, but when the next goal game it was for Toluca. In the 90th minute, Rubens Sambueza sealed the victory for the Diablos with his left-footed finish to make it 1-3.

With the 1-3 win, Toluca reaches four points while Atlas still has zero.
