It was honors even in the Clausura 2018 edition of the Clásico Capitalino as Pumas UNAM and América played out a 0-0 draw. The result keeps the universitarios at the top of the table, although it also ends their perfect start to the season, while the Águilas are likewise still unbeaten.
There were chances at both ends, and América had a dangerous one in the 13th minute. Mateus Uribe played the ball in for Cecilio Domínguez, but Alfredo Saldívar made the save. Then in the 21st minute, Jesús Gallardo tried his luck from distance for the hosts, but his shot was just off target.
The visitors very nearly opened the scoring just before halftime, but Uribe’s 41st-minute header was kept out by the crossbar. In the second half, Pumas hit the woodwork as well with Nicolás Castillo similarly denied.
The two teams were evenly matched throughout the second 45, and despite attack-minded substitutions, the breakthrough wouldn’t come.
Then, in the 86th minute, América was reduced to 10 men as Uribe was controversially sent off after his bicycle-kick attempt resulted in a kick to the face of Castillo. There wasn’t enough time left for Pumas to take advantage of their extra man, however, and they had to settle for a share of the spoils.
With the 0-0 draw, Pumas reach seven points while América reaches five.
