América remained unbeaten in the Clausura 2018 with a 1-0 victory against Atlas. The result is a fourth straight loss for the Rojinegros, who have dropped into last place in the standings, while the Águilas earned their first home win of the season.
Rubén Omar Romano made his debut as Atlas coach, but it wasn’t enough for the Rojinegros to earn their first points of the season. Atlas started the game off well, though, with an early chance by Edwin Gómez that looked to surprise Agustín Marchesín.
But just when the visitors were enjoying their best spell of the game, América opened the scoring. Renato Ibarra sent in a corner kick and Bruno Valdéz out-jumped his defenders to send his header into the back of the net. 1-0.
Jérémy Ménez made his debut for the hosts in the second half, and the Frenchman had a chance in the 73rd minute when he won the ball in midfield and drove into the box, but a tackle prevented him from getting his shot off.
Although América enjoyed the better of the run of play in the second half, they were unable to add to their lead. But in the end the lone goal was enough to end a six-game home winless streak for the Águilas.
With the 1-0 win, América reaches eight points while Atlas still has zero.
