Cruz Azul came out attacking as they looked for that elusive home victory. They had an early chance through Felipe Mora, who sent his bicycle kick attempt into the crossbar in just the 5th minute.
Puebla then had a chance through Lucas Cavallini, but Jesús Corona made the save.
Then, just before halftime, Cruz Azul took the lead. The hosts earned a free kick in a dangerous position after a foul on Édgar Méndez. Adrián Aldrete sent the ball into the box and Julio César Domínguez finished it off to make it 1-0 for La Máquina.
Cruz Azul held on to that lead until the 85th minute, but they were never able to add to it, which kept Puebla in the game. The Poblanos leveled the game through substitute Francisco Acuña, who finished off a cross from Omar Fernández to make it 1-1.
Cruz Azul had a last-gasp attempt to retake the lead in stoppage time with a corner kick that even Corona crowded into the box for, but they were unable to break the deadlock.
With the 1-1 draw, Cruz Azul reaches eight points while Puebla reaches 13.
