Tigres UANL remained unbeaten at home this season with a 2-0 victory against Atlas. The result keeps the Rojinegros rooted to the foot of the table with their fourth straight road loss, while the universitarios snapped a three-game winless streak.
Tigres came out attacking as they looked to get back to winning ways and they had several early chances, but the final touch was lacking. Then, in the 13th minute, Juan Pablo Vigón had a chance for Atlas, but he took too long to get his shot off and the defense intervened.
Tigres came within inches in the 30th minute, when Lucas Zelarayán hit the crossbar. Then, two minutes later, they took the lead. Enner Valencia found André-Pierre Gignac, and the Frenchman made it 1-0 with his header.
Atlas pressed forward in search of an equalizer and felt they should have had a penalty when Luis Rodríguez could have been called for a handball, but the referee ruled it to be unintentional.
In the second half, Tigres looked for an insurance goal and Eduardo Vargas came close in the 73rd minute, but his attempt was just wide. Then Jesús Dueñas had an opportunity of his own, but also failed to take advantage.
Finally, in the 80th minute, Gignac scored his second of the night to ensure the win for Tigres. Ismael Sosa sent in a cross and Gignac made it 2-0 with his header.
With the 2-0 win, Tigres reach 12 points while Atlas still has four.
